Auctioning a quilt.A real favorite during the auction are the delicious homemade meals sold throughout the auction.

The quilt category has been the most consistent in gross sales. This year, again there will be over 90 quilts auctioned including wall hangings, crib quilts, afghans, and regular and queen size spreads. New this year, be sure to check out the Quilter's Corner booth for quilting supplies. This booth will only be open Friday evening 3-9 p.m. so don't miss it.

A first time quilt auction item, be there to place your bid for the Custom Quilt. This quilt is not yet made. Place the winning bid and you will get to name the size, select the colors and fabrics, and select from several patterns for your custom-made quilt. For complete details on this unique auction item, contact Donna Rinner at 319-256-3961.

Food Basket QuiltMade from waxed dyed Java print in brilliant colors and patterns unique to Congo, Africa, the Food Basket quilt is traveling among relief sales in the U.S. gathering donations to alleviate hunger around the world. For example, through MCC’s Food for All program, $500 will cover the cost of feeding one family in Ethiopia for one year and $50 will pay for a drip irrigation system for one garden in Mexico. Come see this beautiful quilt and give to those in need!

Meals in Homes—Meals in Homes—For an experience you won't forget, purchase one of the Meals in Homes. Choose from a variety of cuisines and settings, and invite your family, friends or co-workers to share it with you! Below are meals that were auctioned at the 2010 sale.

  • Jerry and Lou Miller are offering their OUTDOOR "CREAM CAN" SUPPER again this year. Bring your party of 12 to enjoy this unique experience at their Wellman home. This involves layering potatoes, cabbage, onions, sweet corn, brats and more on top of each other in an old-fashioned cream can which then cooks while buried in a charcoal pit! Dessert is included. Great fun for outdoor lovers but must be enjoyed before it gets too cold!

  • Nyle and Lauralee Kauffman invite your party of 8-10 to their rural Iowa City home. They will serve up a TRADITIONAL MEAL with the meat to be decided on with the top bidder. This meal is good for one year!

  • Roger and Patty Gingrich invite your party of 8 to a LOG HOME DINNER in their Iowa City home. Your party of 8 will enjoy meats grilled to perfection and seasonal foods sure to please. Appetizers will be served and a special dessert will cap off the meal. You'll think you are on vacation in Colorado!

  • Laura and Willis Krehbiel have a unique idea for your next family or work get-together! They live in what used to be the Donnellson High School, which they have converted to residential and business use. Your group of 10-12 (somewhat flexible on the numbers) will enjoy a made-from-scratch ITALIAN BUFFET DINNER IN THE HIGH SCHOOL which could be served for a noon or dinnertime meal. This will include classic Italian lasagna, pasta with various sauces, and risotto alla Parmigiana, several fruit and vegetable side dishes depending on the season, homemade breadsticks and a variety of Italian desserts including (of course) tiramisu. Afterwards, you can have a meeting, devotions, play games, relax and talk or go to the gym for some basketball or racquetball. Sounds like fun! Must be enjoyed before November 15, 2010.

  • Catherine Ropp will make your party of 8-10 an AMISH MEAL with your choice of meat and serve it to you in her log home located in rural Kalona.

  • Devon and Jen Yoder of Iowa City invite you to their home for a delicious, FRENCH BRUNCH for 6. The menu will include a field green salad with toasted hazelnuts, goat cheese and raspberry vinaigrette dressing; assortment of filled croissants—chocolate, almond and savory cream cheese; quiche Lorraine; pan seared broccoli or asparagus; potatoes Lyonnaise; fruit and yogurt parfaits; coffee, tea and sparkling orange juice (mimosas). The date will be mutually agreed upon by host and guests.

  • Darvin and Martha Yoder invite your party of 8 to their country home for a delicious THAI MEAL. The meal will include several curry dishes. They live close to where the I-80 Amana exit meets F32—about 8 miles east of Parnell.

  • FRANK'S FABULOUS SHISH-KABOBS will be the focus of this meal hosted by Frank and Jane Yoder, of Kalona. While Frank is concentrating on the shish-kabobs (with interesting things like pineapples and feta-stuffed olives), Jane will be creating the rest of the meal featuring a rice dish, tossed salad and a delicious, seasonal pie. This meal needs to be served sometime before it gets too cold, or you'll have to wait until the spring!

  • Gretchen Geyer, a senior at IMS, invites your party of 8 to an AUTHENTIC GREEK MEAL at her parent's home in Parnell, IA. Greek dishes will be served including the classic dessert—baklava. She is eager to demonstrate for you her new-found skills which she developed this year in Kathryn Ney's Culinary Arts class at IMS.

  • Ellis and Marcia Miller invite you to a MEMORABLE DINNER FOR 12 in a beautiful country home in a peaceful rural setting. Enjoy a relaxing four course candlelight meal with dinner music. Dinner will include two meats plus sides, with an exciting dessert bar to finish. This meal will be served any time after October 1, 2010 and before May 15th 2011.

  • Joe and Mary Beachy will be serving up a TRADITIONAL roast beef or chicken breast meal to your party of 12 people. Their home is south of Kalona and this meal must be used before the end of 2010.

  • Nelson and Mary Miller invite your party of 8 to their rural Kalona home for TRADITIONAL BEEF ROAST dinner. Dates are negotiable and good until the end of May, 2011.

  • Lori Witthoft invites your party of 8 for a GOURMET SEVEN-COURSE MEAL at her rural, Wellman home. The courses will go like this: appetizer, soup, salad, sorbet to cleanse the palate, meat (poultry/shrimp), meat (red meat or fish) along with potatoes or rice and a vegetable, then finally--dessert! She says "Come hungry!"

  • Nathan and Karla Stoltzfus Detweiler invite your party of 8 people to their Iowa City home for a "SIMPLY IN SEASON" MEAL featuring locally grown meat grilled over a fire, salads bursting with flavors of fresh herbs and veggies, homemade bread and hand-churned ice cream with seasonal fruit for dessert. To take advantage of the local produce, this meal needs to be served before September 30, 2010.

  • Zach and Lindsey Row-Heyveld are excited to prepare a TRADITIONAL 5-COURSE ROMAN MEAL for your party of 6 people. They spent some time in Rome this winter and fell in love with the city and its food. Now they want to treat you to some authentic Italian food including antipasti, several delightful main dishes (including pasta, of course) and dessert. This meal is good through March, 2011.

  • John Yutzy will once again offer 6 certificates, each for 6 quarts of HOMEMADE ICE CREAM! Flavors are negotiable, too!

  • Lynn Lehman will offer 3 certificates for a massage at PEACEFUL RENEWAL MASSAGE in Frytown. What a great way to relax and renew yourself!
